Iconic fashion moments don’t just happen on the runway or red carpet. If we’re looking to feel inspired through fashion, sometimes we don’t have to look any further than our favorite movie or television shows! When it comes to the genre of films with the best fashion, no other genre of movies pops off as well as the romantic comedy.

Fashion in Films

Think of your favorite rom com. Now when you think of this movie, does an image of an incredible outfit worn by one of the main characters come to mind? Oftentimes the fashion in rom com movies is just as, if not more, compelling than the storyline itself. From Jennifer Garner's colorful cocktail dress in 13 Going on 30, to the little red slip dress in She’s All That, to the drop dead gorgeous baby blue ball gown worn by Constance Wu in Crazy Rich Asians, to the elegant purple evening gown worn by Amy Adams as she glides down the stairs greeting Patrick Dempsy in Enchanted; the list iconic fashion moments in these films goes on and on.

Fashion helps set the mood and tell the story. How a character dresses can signify major moments in a film. Perhaps a character is going through a major glow up, or a change in confidence, personality, or power. Let’s talk about one of our favorite rom com power pieces, the stunning yellow silk gown worn by Kate Hudson in the 2003 romantic comedy, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

The Movie: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

The 90s and early 2000s basically dominate when it comes to classic romantic comedies, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days was one of the many incredible movies to be made during this era. Just to give a quick breakdown, the film stars Kate Hudson playing Andie Anderson and Mathew McConaughe playing Benjamin Berry. Andie works as a writer for a popular woman’s magazine and is tasked with writing a piece about specifically the “Don’ts” of dating. As a hands-on writer she employs herself into an actual relationship with the mission of driving her partner up the wall to the point where they break up with her within 10 days of dating. (hence the title How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days). Benjamin, on the other hand, places a bet with his friend that he can make any woman fall in love with him in 10 days… I’m sure you see where this story is going.

After many hilarious and heartfelt scenes in the movie, the two do eventually form a true loving connection (no big surprise there) leading up to the pinnacle moment in the film, on their 10th day of dating where they attend Ben’s glamorous work party. This is the scene that introduces us to the iconic yellow gown worn by Kate Hudson’s character Andie.

The Iconic Yellow Gown

Kate Hudson’s golden yellow gown radiates extreme main character energy, it’s no surprise that nearly 20 years later, fans are still talking and raving about this dress. The gown was a long, slinky, golden yellow, silk dress with a sexy low back and cross straps.

The Designer

A dress truly made to make anyone fall in love, many have wondered "Who made this yellow dress from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days?" Well, this memorable piece was created by fashion designer Carolina Herrera. Herrera is a Venezuelan fashion designer, known for creating and styling many of our country’s former First Lady’s including Jacqueline Onassis, Laura Bush, Michelle Obama, and Melania Trump. Her style is described as being classic and ladylike. In a 1987 interview with Vogue she shared that she “prefers clothes that are simple, well cut, but with one major extravagance.” Looking at the yellow dress from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, this essence of her design style clearly shows through.

Where is the dress today?

Sadly after the filming of the movie wrapped, the yellow dress was lost. In an interview with Elle, Kate Hudson said: ‘I have no idea where that dress is!” Many years have passed since this iconic film was released, and people are still obsessed with searching for this gown or finding dupes of their own. One Tik Tok user went viral after finding a similar gown to the original at a thrift store for $4! Watch their viral Tik Tok here.

How to Rock the Color Yellow

So what exactly was it about Kate Hudson’s gown that makes it so iconic? Perhaps it’s the sleek yet sexy silhouette paired with a touch of a low back. Or maybe the radiant golden yellow color? While yellow may not always be the easiest color to pull off, when it’s done right, it really is a power color. Are you someone that’s unsure about how to wear the color yellow? Well, let’s take a look at how the dress was styled and how you too can pull off the fabulous color of yellow.

First things first, when wearing any color, you want to make sure that it compliments YOU. When looking for colors that compliment your hair or skin color, oftentimes you’ll want to make sure there is just enough of a contrast so you are neither overpowered nor washed out by a certain color. Now you may have heard in the past that people with lighter complexions or blonde hair can’t pull off the color yellow… yeah well Kate Hudson basically puts both those ideas to shame. By choosing a shade of yellow that is warm yet lighter than her glowing skin tone and wearing her blonde hair in soft updo, Kate Hudson shows us how to wear the color yellow in a complimentary way. Paired with a white clutch and ravishing jeweled necklace, this look was simply to die for.
